On this day in the far distant past, in the ancient times of 1942, Los Angeles had one of the raddest events in the city's history - the Battle of Los Angeles. There were two possible explanations for the events that day - either the army triggered an hour long false alarm after believing a weather balloon to be an enemy aircraft which they shone search lights on and fired 1,400 12.8-pound anti aircraft shells into, or it was aliens.
It was definitely aliens.
The belief it was alien visitation certainly makes the aftermath of the air raid a little less tragic, because five civilians dying and buildings being damaged by falling shells over a weather balloon just makes the US army look very silly - but dying during an alien attack? Now these folks are heroes. See how we made this story better for everyone involved?
The events also inspired the rotten Battle: Los Angeles film that had Ne-Yo playing an army corporal for some reason, so in some respects the suffering of that day has never truly ended.
We've gone ahead and included the picture printed in the papers at the time that led to UFO speculations - so you can go ahead and decide what you believe to be true I guess. But it was aliens.
Absolutely, positively, aliens.
